A Film describing the 1st Bn. Royal Sussex Regiment in the Battle of Monte Casino 1944. -- With memories from the late Lt. Col. John Buckeridge, as he describes the battle. (Col. Buckeridge was then, a young subaltern under  his Coy. Comd Maj. Ben Doulton & his CO, Col. "Pip" Newton )

 The Bn. received heavy casualties, before the  monastery later fell to the Polish Corps.

Regiment near Amiens,  France  during a rearguard action covering the evacuation at Dunkirk in WW2, (resulting in their capture). - May/June 1940

Composer Damian Montagu was inspired to write this music. which he titled ‘The Boar’s Head’ after hearing the story of ‘The Day Sussex Died.’

Damian wrote : "The story of Richebourg has occupied almost four decades of my life. The phrase ‘The Day Sussex Died’ comes from a statement made by Sussex veteran Alfred Banfield, from Hove, who was there that day. He asked me to publish it in an article in 1986 on the 70th Anniversary, and it’s good to see it continues to have (and gain !) power,

all these years later ". - South Downs National Parks.
